Garage Door Remote Programming Guide

Program new remotes and car buttons in minutes

Programming Methods by Opener Type

Method 1: Learn Button (Most Common)

Works for: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman (1993+), Genie (2011+)

  1. 1. Locate "Learn" button on opener (usually near antenna wire, may be under light cover)
  2. 2. Press and release Learn button (light will turn on or LED will blink)
  3. 3. Within 30 seconds, press and hold button on remote you want to program
  4. 4. Hold remote button until opener light blinks or you hear two clicks
  5. 5. Test remote - door should operate normally

Note: Learn button color indicates type: Purple/Red/Orange = Security+ 2.0 (rolling code), Yellow = Security+ (older)

Method 2: Smart/Learn Button (Genie Openers)

Works for: Genie Intellicode openers (1995-2010)

  1. 1. Press and hold "Smart" or "Program" button on opener (usually 6-8 seconds)
  2. 2. LED light will blink (entering programming mode)
  3. 3. Press remote button 3-4 times slowly
  4. 4. LED will stop blinking when successfully programmed
  5. 5. Test remote operation

Method 3: DIP Switches (Older Openers)

Works for: Pre-1993 openers (Chamberlain, LiftMaster, Sears)

  1. 1. Open battery compartment on remote and opener receiver
  2. 2. Find DIP switches (9-12 small switches in a row)
  3. 3. Set remote DIP switches to match exact pattern on opener
  4. 4. Close battery compartments and test

Security Note: DIP switch openers are not secure (fixed code). Consider upgrading to rolling code opener for better security.

Programming Car Homelink/Built-in Buttons

Step 1: Clear Existing Codes (Optional)

Press and hold outer two buttons on car visor until light blinks (about 20 seconds). This clears all programmed buttons.

Step 2: Program Car Button to Handheld Remote

  1. 1. Hold handheld remote 1-3 inches from car button you want to program
  2. 2. Press and hold both buttons simultaneously until car button light changes from slow to rapid blink (20-30 seconds)
  3. 3. Release both buttons

Step 3: Complete Programming at Opener (If Needed)

If car button doesn't operate door after Step 2, you need to sync with opener:

  1. 1. Press Learn button on opener
  2. 2. Within 30 seconds, press and hold programmed car button for 2 seconds
  3. 3. Press car button again and hold for 2 seconds
  4. 4. Test - door should operate

Note: Some newer cars (2015+) require menu-based programming through car touchscreen. Consult vehicle owner's manual.

Troubleshooting Programming Issues

Remote Won't Program

  • • Check remote battery (replace with fresh battery)
  • • Make sure you're within 30-second window after pressing Learn button
  • • Verify Learn button is correct one (some openers have multiple buttons)
  • • Try clearing all remotes first: hold Learn button 10 seconds until light turns off

Remote Works Intermittently

  • • Replace battery (weak battery = short range)
  • • Check antenna wire on opener (should hang down, not coiled/damaged)
  • • Reprogram remote (signal may have degraded)
  • • Check for interference (LED bulbs, Wi-Fi routers near opener)

Can't Find Learn Button

  • • LiftMaster/Chamberlain: Under light cover, near power cord, or side panel
  • • Genie: Behind light cover or on side of powerhead
  • • Craftsman: Near antenna wire connection
  • • Very old openers: May not have Learn button (use DIP switches or replace opener)
