Essential Garage Door Spring Maintenance: A Complete Guide
Springs are what make your garage door actually workable. Without them, that 150 to 400-pound door would need a motor the size of a truck to lift. They do all the counterbalancing, and they do it silently until they don’t.
In Alabama, springs take more abuse than in most of the country. The humidity alone knocks years off the expected lifespan.
Monthly Visual Inspection
Takes two minutes. Do it every month.
Look at the coil surface for rust or discoloration. Alabama’s humidity accelerates corrosion, and catching it early matters. Look for gaps between coils, which means the spring is losing tension. Open the door halfway and let go. A properly balanced door stays put. If it drifts up or down, the spring tension is off.
Listen, too. Squeaking or grinding on the way up or down usually means the spring needs lubrication. A loud bang from the garage means a spring broke.
Quarterly Lubrication
Every three months, apply a silicone-based or lithium-based lubricant along the full length of each spring. Open and close the door a few times to work it in, then wipe off any excess so it doesn’t drip.
Don’t use WD-40. It’s a moisture displacer, not a lubricant. It’ll feel like it helps for a week and then make things worse.
Alabama Seasonal Considerations
Summer (May-September): Heat makes metal expand. Check door balance more often during heat waves. A door that was balanced in March may not be in July. Make sure the garage has adequate ventilation.
Winter (November-March): Cold makes springs more brittle. Apply fresh lubricant before temperatures drop. If you hear more noise than usual in cold weather, that’s often the spring stiffening, not breaking. But get it looked at anyway.
Warning Signs That Need Professional Attention
Call us if you see visible gaps between the coils. Call us if the door suddenly feels heavier than usual. Call us if one side hangs lower than the other. Call us if you hear a loud bang from the garage.
These aren’t “watch and wait” situations.
Don’t Touch the Springs
I say this to every customer: don’t try to adjust or replace a torsion spring yourself. The stored tension in those springs is enough to cause severe injury. We’ve seen it happen. Professional technicians have the tools and training to handle them safely. This is one repair that’s not worth the risk, ever.
